Staying In Shape When You Have Young Kids

Before I had my two kids, I was used to working out at the gym, playing badminton and going for a run whenever I wanted. With a toddler and baby, I found it was much more difficult to find the time to exercise and invest in my own health and well-being in the way I was used to. However, I was determined to eke out some time in my day for myself and found that if you’re willing to be flexible and take a creative approach to the way you exercise, you can stay in shape. I started this blog to share my tips with other mums and help readers create their own fitness routines that allow them to continue taking part in the sporting activities they enjoy in a way that fits in with their responsibilities as parents.

Essential items that every new clay shooting enthusiast should have

by Tommy Gordon

Clay shooting (a sport which involves using a shotgun to shoot clay targets) can be a very enjoyable and challenging hobby. However, you cannot simply show up at a shooting range with your shotgun and ammunition and expect to participate; you will need quite a bit of specialist equipment to get started. Read on to find out more:

Safety gear

It is crucial for those who intend to take up clay shooting as a hobby to equip themselves with the necessary safety gear.

Shotguns are extremely loud; without ear protection, you could end up developing both tinnitus (a constant ringing in the ears) and hearing loss. As such, one of the most important items you will need is a pair of noise-cancelling ear muffs. Ideally, these should be paired with a set of foam ear plugs for maximum protection.

You will also need to invest in a pair of safety goggles. These will prevent dust and dirt from entering your eyes whilst you're on the shooting range; this is important, as a speck of dirt in your eye could impair your vision and affect the aim of your shotgun which, in turn, could endanger the lives of those around you. Safety goggles can also protect your eyes from damage caused by your gun's recoil (i.e. when the gun moves backward after it has discharged the bullet).

Additionally, it may be worth purchasing a pair of heat resistant gloves, as the barrel of a shotgun can become extremely hot after it has fired several shots. This heat can make it harder for you to hold the gun firmly and may even result in you sustaining burns.

A shooting vest

A shooting vest is a must-have item for anyone who participates in clay shooting. This type of vest serves several purposes; firstly, it can protect you from the cold and prevent low temperatures from affecting your performance. Secondly, shooting vests come with a wide range of pockets designed specifically to hold things like eye and ear protection, gloves, and ammunition.

When purchasing this item, make sure to select a vest which has extra-large ammunition pockets, as this will save you the hassle of having to return to your vehicle to top up your supply throughout the course of your shooting session.

If you intend to be a clay shooter for many years to come, it's worth investing in a higher quality vest made from a robust fabric (such as suede or leather), with even, strong stitching and a water-resistant coating.
